At the heart of the S4, both in sedan and estate body, we find a powerful V6 turbocharged gasoline direct injection. The 3.0 TFSI block offers a maximum power output of 354 hp and 500 Nm of torque from 1,370 RPM to 4,500 RPM. All this is accompanied by an eight-speed tiptronic automatic gearbox, which replaces the previous dual-clutch, and has a "sailing" mode that is activated between 50 and 160 km / h to reduce consumption.
Thanks to the quattro all-wheel drive and the thrust of the V6, the new S4 manages to reach 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds and continues accelerating up to 250 km/h, electronically limited. The Avant version needs only two tenths of a second more. According to the NEDC cycle, the saloon consumes 7.4 litres per 100 km and the Avant 0.1 litres more. These fuel consumption figures are lower than its predecessor, despite the more powerful engine: the new S4 weighs 1,630 kg in its saloon version and 1,675 kg in its Avant version, a drop of 75 kg compared to the previous model.
The quattro permanent all-wheel drive puts a greater emphasis on the rear axle, and if necessary can direct most of the engine power to the axle with the most grip. The self-locking center differential is capable of sending up to 85% of the torque to the rear axle. The torque vectoring system improves cornering stability by distributing the torque in the best possible way between the four wheels and the brakes act with the least possible interference, although a rear sport differential is available as an option.
Under the body of the S4 we find a five-arm suspension on both axles and a height lowered by 23 mm compared to the rest of the A4 range.
Its appearance is discreet, as we are accustomed to the Ingolstadt brand, but silver body details and aluminum trims make the design is accentuated a little more, as well as the classic Audi grille with honeycomb panel design in black honeycomb, an aluminum diffuser and four exhaust outlets. Also noteworthy are 18-inch wheels with five double-spoke (optionally there are 19-inch) which hides a specific braking equipment.
Inside we find room for five passengers in front with a sports seats S (optional) with massage function, adjustable side supports and integrated headrests. The standard upholstery is fine nappa leather in black, rotor grey or magma red with different designs. In other countries the Virtual Cockpit is optional, but Audi offers it as standard in Spain; it shows all the information in detail on a 12.3-inch screen.
It has predictive efficiency assistant that helps the driver to save fuel, adaptive cruise control (ACC) that, between 0 and 65 km / h, the driving assistant and traffic jams can take control of the steering on well-paved roads and congested traffic situations. For added safety, systems such as Audi pre sense, rear cross traffic assist, exit warning, turn assist and collision avoidance assistant are also available.
Audi has strengthened the standard equipment, hence the price above its rivals.
Standard includes LED headlights both front and rear, Audi Sport specific 19″ wheels, sports seats upholstered in a combination of leather and Alcantara, three-spoke leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, Audi connect safety&Service system, three-zone climate control, parking assistant parking system plus, cruise control, armrest comfort and heated mirrors with power folding, among others. The Avant version adds an electrically operated tailgate and the tray that hides the luggage compartment.
As for infotainment systems, how could it be otherwise, the S4 equips the MMI Navigation plus system with Audi Connect for 3 years, has high-speed Internet connection with integrated Wi-Fi for the enjoyment of the passage. Of course it has compatibility for iOS and Android devices. For music lovers who want to listen to music in good quality, a 3D sound system signed by Bang & Olufsen is available.
In option Audi offers extras such as trunk opening by gesture control, Head-Up display and Matrix LED headlights, although to know them all you have to check the official configurator.
