1. Walk-away door lock
One of the coolest features of a Tesla is the ability to lock your doors as you walk away from your vehicle. When carrying a key fob, this feature allows you to lock the doors and trunk without having to press a single button. Once the Tesla no longer detects the nearby key fob, the car protects itself. This also works when the keychain battery dies.
Activate this feature on your touch screen by going to Controls > Vehicle > Walk-Away Door Lock.
If you want to disable this feature when you park your vehicle at home, simply configure your home location and check the “Home Exclude” checkbox when setting up the Walk-Away Door Lock feature.
The Tesla locks automatically after a while if you unlock it using the mobile app and the doors remain closed. Therefore, it's best to always carry your key fob with you when parking in a location with poor cell phone signal – you don't want to be stranded with no way back!
When you exit your vehicle and close all doors, the Walk-Away Door Lock feature will not work if your vehicle detects an authenticated key fob for five minutes after you exit your vehicle. As with all electronic devices, Teslas are not free from occasional errors. Sometimes, Teslas have trouble detecting the key fob. When this happens, you will receive a touchscreen message stating that the key fob is not detected inside the vehicle. Don't panic! This is normal!
Fixing the problem is simple. Simply place the key fob next to an area where the car detects its presence. Place it under the low voltage outlet – this usually does the trick.
What to do if Tesla can't detect your key fob
Again, don't panic! If your Tesla does not detect the key fob even after moving it under the low voltage outlet, the problem could be interference with other devices. Try moving your keychain at least six feet away from any phones or laptops to make it more discoverable.
