Tesla's SUV is practically one “Model 3 raised”, an aesthetic solution that perhaps does not make it the most beautiful Tesla of the four models available today, but let us not go too far on aesthetic judgments as they are always very personal. L'rear trunk access is completely revised with the tailgate integrating the rear window and opening fully providing a much wider access compared to Model 3. The trunk is therefore not only more capacious due to the greater volume gained in height, but access and cargo compartment flush with the bumper makes using it much more comfortable. The main defect of Model 3 is not the size of the load compartment, which remains very roomy, but the limited height which does not allow you to easily transport large loads. To give you an example, it is impossible to carry four tires (for tire changes) on Model 3, while it is very easy on Model Y. Two buttons allow you to fold down the rear seats directly from the trunk. Point against for the lack of a cover curtain, which allows you to see, from the outside, the contents of the trunk. Tesla has tried to limit this problem by darkening the rear window and rear door windows, but with the right lighting it is still possible to see inside.
This extra rear space can be optioned with two additional seats, but currently it is not possible to choose this solution in Spain. Model Y's greater front height has allowed Tesla to also increase the volume of the front compartment, which can easily carry much more than a backpack. Inside we find more capacious door pockets and an insert that offers continuity to the design of the dashboard. The rest is identical to Model 3, then minimal design and large central screen characterize the experience.
La driving position is higher and more relaxed compared to Model 3, also thanks to the more spacious passenger compartment and wider windows. The driving experience, on the other hand, is not very different, the car is always snappy and the greater size and height are not perceived while driving. It is always agile, even in curves, and it is only the raised view that tells us that we are on board an SUV. Model 3, in this context, satisfies a little more for its sportiness, the greater proximity of the seat to the ground, but the difference in terms of general experience is limited.
Model Y is only available in all-wheel drive powertrains Long Range e Performance. The technical data tells us that acceleration of Model Y (0-100) is 5,1 seconds (0,7 seconds slower than Model 3) and 3,7 seconds in the Performance model (0,4 seconds slower of Model 3). These differences are difficult to hear while driving the most marked disparity is the data on autonomy which for Model Y Long Range is 507 km and drops to 480 km for the Performance version. As a comparison, the Model 3 reaches 614 km (Long Range) and 547 km (Performance), respectively. These differences are defined by the less aerodynamics and greater weight of Model Y. We carried out our test with Model Y Performance and we confirm that the WLTP data declared are close to reality; obviously this range can be obtained by avoiding too sudden accelerations and limiting speed on the motorway.

Price-wise, Model Y has a base price list superior to that of Model 3. For example, the Long Range version costs 60.990 euros, practically the same price as Model 3 Performance, while an additional 8.000 euros are required for the Model Y Performance. All models feature advanced autopilot as an option, which can be purchased at any time. Being identical on all cars, we do not believe it is necessary to reiterate its functioning. Model Y also offers an assisted off-road driving mode that allows you to tackle the most difficult terrains without particular problems.
What we like about Model 3
Model 3 has a more streamlined and sporty line, a lower riding position and slightly better speed performance. The autonomy is decidedly better, especially on Long Range. What we like least about Model 3 is the height of the rear load compartment, as in some cases it does not allow us to effectively exploit the volume.
What we like about Model Y
Model Y offers a Huge rear cargo area and above all, a large tailgate which allows access to it very easily. The front cargo area is also very respectable. We like the more relaxed and high driving position, even if this makes them lose aggressiveness and sportiness, despite the high performance.
Which one to choose?
More than on off-road qualities, Model Y is preferred for its load compartment and the ease with which you can access the interior spaces. It's a'car that winks at families, so if you want to travel in comfort, Model Y is for you. If, on the other hand, you are looking for more sportiness and are willing to lose something in comfort, Model 3 is better in every respect.
