If Musk has understood that the time has come to launch dedicated insurance, it is because it is not enough for insurance companies that the Tesla Model 3 is the safest electric car in crash tests. A survey by the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) has in fact shown that the Tesla Model S and Tesla Model X are among the most expensive cars to repair. Too many sensors, cutting-edge technologies and specific spare parts are the main risks they raise the cost of insuring a Tesla. Therefore, the strategy of attracting customers by emphasizing only the safety aspect was like a red herring according to the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) which recently warned Tesla to cease promotional activity because it was potentially misleading.
