What is the 50 license?
For a long time, small commuter motorcycles could be driven by anyone without the need for a specific license. Over the years, the Highway Code has evolved and driving these vehicles now requires a licence.
In fact, the so-called 50 licence allows the driver to drive scooters or quadricycles with an engine capacity of less than 50 cc and a maximum speed of 45 km/h. The 50 licence can be obtained from the age of 14, but does not allow the transport of a passenger.
What is the difference between the 50 licence and the AM licence?
Actually, the 50 licence does not exist in the Highway Code. The correct terminology is AM license, represented on the driver's license by the first line and the moped. If you do not know what we are talking about, we suggest you read the article where we explain how to read the driving license.
Logically in the collective imagination the 50 license or even better "the license" are still much more used terms than the AM license even though they are the same thing.
How much does the 50 license cost?
Unlike other driver's licenses, the 50 license can be used to avoid taking a training course at a driving school. In fact, the parent committee can request the activation of a free course for the AM license at their child' s school. This request is usually given to the school principal, who must provide the course activation.
There is no cost for this course, as it is part of a Ministry of Transportation and Ministry of Education strategy to promote road safety education for children.
What is the cost of the 50 license exam?
The cost of the 50 license is very affordable because between the exam bookings and the medical exams the cost is around 150 euros. The cost items for the 50 license include two payments of 16 and 24 euros, a revenue stamp of 16 euros, a bulletin of 16 euros and the medical examination for the medical certificate of about 50 euros.
Obviously, these are the costs for private individuals, which do not include the cost of the driving course. For an AM patent course we usually talk about another 150-200 euros which is added to the 150 euros of the cost as a private citizen.
