The mystery of the internal camera that can spy on passengers of the Tesla Model 3 is unveiled by Elon Musk in the tweet below. So the answer is yes, the Model 3 can spy on customers, but not yet. In fact, Tesla has planned for the Tesla Model 3 to launch a fleet of self-driving robot taxis. In practice, when private Tesla customers do not use the car, they can make it available through a dedicated app. The internal camera will be used, when enabled, to record what happens in the cockpit of the Tesla Model 3 during the rental. But there's more: Elon Musk would have also anticipated that the same camera could also be used to improve the functionality of the Tesla Sentry Mode, i.e. the sentinel mode that monitors the car when the owner is not there.
